Steam Workshop Mods Setup – Migration

So, as part of a long overdue process, we have finally dropped PlayWithSix — it won’t be missed. From now on, our mods will be distributed through the Steam Workshop, becoming much faster to download and easier to maintain. Let’s get started in 5 simple steps.

Step 1 – Downloading the Preset

Head over to bro.ma/preset and download the zip file. Extract the folder “mods_reset” anywhere in your PC.

Step 2 – Loading the Preset

Launch your ArmA 3 on Steam and drag the file “launcher_preset.html” into the launcher. When prompted, simply hit “SUBSCRIBE” and you’re done. However, if you already have the mods in the preset locally through PWS or something else and don’t want to be bothered with re-downloading them all, continue reading below. Otherwise, skip straight to Step 5.

Step 3 – Migrating the Mods

Wait until Steam starts downloading the mods. Once that happens, close your ArmA 3 Launcher AND Steam — yes, while it’s downloading the mods. To save you time, we’ve written a script that will either COPY or MOVE the mods from you ArmA 3 folder into the workshop’s. This should be done carefully, as if you go full retard and screw everything up your mod files may be lost permanently. Be a good boy and pay attention if you want to survive.

Right click the “migrate_mods.cmd” and choose “Edit“.

Now, in line 23 and 29 (12 and 15 respectively on the regular Notepad), edit its contents to match your Steam Workshop, and the folder where your ArmA 3 mods are installed.

If you’ve edited everything correctly, it should look something like this.

Run the script AS ADMIN. You will be prompted to confirm if you wish to continue, and then to press either C to COPY, or M to MOVE the mods to the appropriate folder.

ONCE AGAIN, CHOOSE CAREFULLY, AS IF YOU DECIDE TO COPY, IT’LL BE ANOTHER 20 GB ON YOU HDD, AND IF YOU MOVE, THEY WILL BE GONE FROM THEIR ORIGINAL LOCATION. DON’T BLAME US IF YOU FUCKED UP FOR BEING AN ILLITERATE FAGGOT.

This shit will take a long fucking time, trust me. So don’t go losing your patience and freak out, but if you think something went wrong, you can check the migration logs that are created at the “migration_logs” folder.

You’re almost done, stay with me. Open the aptly named file “PASTE_INSIDE_appworkshop_107410.json” (hint, it’s a clue on what to do with it) and copy the entirety of it’s contents to your clipboard.

Head over to your workshop folder and open the file “appworkshop_107410.acf“. Paste after the curly brace in line 10, and save the changes. BeforeAfter.

Ring-a-ding-ding, you’re done.

Step 4 – Processing the Mods

Restart Steam and launch ArmA 3 yet again. If you paid attention to the steps and followed them properly, a bunch of green messages should appear on the bottom of the Launcher, telling you about all the new mods that were updated. Good job. Keep in mind though: depending on how out of date you mods are, you may need to do some further downloading.

Step 5 – Installing Task Force Radio (TFAR)

Within your ArmA 3 folder, find a hidden folder called !Workshop, which means you need to make sure your Windows is set to display those. Inside that, go to @Task Force Arrowhead Radio (BETA!!!)\teamspeak. CLOSE YOUR TEAMSPEAK3 and install the addon named task_force_radio that’s in there. That’s it, you’re good to go.

Step 6 – Joining the Server

There are two ways of joining the server. In the Launcher, choose the “SERVERS” section. Afterwards, you can either:

Click “DIRECT CONNECT” and enter “bro.ma” for the address and “nofun” for the password. It’ll be available in your “RECENT” tab from there on.

Or join the BromA Unit, which requires basically no effort and it makes us look cool. Once that’s done, the BromA server will always be available from the “UNITS” tab.

Regardless, it is NOT recommended to join through the launcher, it fucking sucks and therefore will always have inaccurate information on what mods the server is actually running.

In closing

Wow, that was hard. Now you can finally kiss PWS good-bye and never have to worry about downloading your shit at 50kb/s ever again.
